Capsule Collection S/S 08

Class of '08

What matches perfectly with a Nantucket summer, sailing, and elite Ivy League schools? If you’ve noticed polo’s, khaki shorts, and wide leg trousers then you’ve got the answer: preppy style.
Preppy style may be a trend, but it’s also a classic look. Preppy never truly went away—although we can say that it was lying dormant before it surfaced again. The preppy look first surfaced as a true trend in the late 1970s through 1980s, after sportswear and athletic gear was accepted and adapted into casual wear.
I wanted to put a slight twist on this though, taking inspiration from Luella Bartleys bright Spring collection of 2008, were she used small floral prints and less traditional shapes. Also incorporating drop waists of the 20’s and wide leg nautical style trousers, yet still keeping some staple garments of a varsity girls wardrobe, such as a cut off denim skirt teamed with a fitted jersey cardigan, knee length khaki shorts with a large turn up and a trapeze style crisp cotton shirt .
I also took inspiration from Antonio Marras for Kenzo from his spring collection 2006, his bold use of colour and take on the nautical theme. Nautical inspiration is a preppy clothes staple. As I found when researching into the history of casual wear, as you can see from my mood boards.
I imagine the fabric to be a mixture from the obvious cotton, linen, jerseys and denim to the chiffon and organza for the layering aspects of certain designs.
