Birds glide through the sky with such grace, they are delicate, graceful beings. On the ground they have a smooth solid shape, however once they spread there wings and fly away they reveal their beautiful wings that had been folded and hidden away. It is this concept that fills me with inspiration for my project entitled Flyaway.

My starting point and initial idea for means of research is based around the theme of ‘Birds.’ I find that the idea of wings, feathers and expansion generate many ideas and inspiration for me. I want to experiment using the concept of birds wings, only using fabric, to see how this will then develop in to garment construction.

Etre was described as an artist of the twenties. I particularly like his style and the way in which he portrays women in his pictures. The women are depicted as elegant and very feminine. When I came across the work of Etre I felt inspired by the way he illustrated the drape of the fabrics, particularly with regards to his experimental winged sleeve detail, which appeared to be re-occurring through out his work.

Manish Arora is one of the more recent designers on the catwalk. His summer 2007 collection bloomed on the catwalk and received lots of media attention with regards to his bizarre bird inspired collection.
The collection was an explosion of colour, with a palette from Asia that was bold and exciting. I loved the unique individual style of Manish Arora and wanted my collection to have a similar appeal.

I want the collection to convey a particular image, with a sexy feel and a glamorous style. I want my garments to be a choice for the more sophisticated female. The collection is to be made for summer 2008, therefore bright, bold colours will be used. The colours used in the collection are a key detail. Tropical birds and birds of paradise are the inspiration for the chosen colour combinations. The fabrics chosen must be appropriate for a sunny climate, therefore I will use light weight silk, satin and chiffon.
