More ImagesBefore the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century, skilled craftsmen and artisans were the dominant producers. They practised a simple craft, using simple tools to produce decorative items completely by hand. However, by the nineteenth century the craftsman’s golden era was long gone. The industrial revolution often meant craftsmen were forced to mass-produce their work. Even though they fought this development they were replaced by factory workers, who were often uneducated, and focused only on one part of the mechanical or industrial process. Hence the craftsman’s skills began to die out in the battle against the period’s new inventions.Handcrafts and bespoke work are slowly reemerging in today’s society, although still fighting the same battle against mass production. The aim of my collection is to highlight some of these crafts and illustrate modern technology being used to complement traditional methods. During the course of my research it became apparent that the craftsmen often worked in awkward positions, so much so that many suffered what is now known as repetitive strain injuries by working long hours in the same attitude. These images were the spark that inspired my collection. Distorted and/or twisted suits, shirts and tailored garments are the key features. My collection is addressing the bodily constrictions associated with the nineteenth century. I am focusing on restriction or otherwise of the human body, and the twist of clothing on a moving body. My target group is female, between twenty five and thirty five years old. My collection is aimed at a fashion conscious, confident, ultra feminine woman, who loves to combine vintage findings with designer labels. The wearer is sophisticated and admires bespoke touches and finishes, reminiscent of the past. |
